Ready for the Scariest FIVE MINUTE FIX of all?

Posted on: April 16th, 2013 by Deborah Plouffe No Comments

OK…are you ready for the very hardest, challenging, scariest FIVE MINUTE FIX of all? We shared this one tonight on the Tuesday Night with Neworld show!

In fewer than FIVE MINUTES, you can uplug your clock radio, move it as far across the room from your bed as you can, reset the time and set the alarm ONE HALF HOUR earlier than usual.

I TOLD you it was scary, didn’t I?

What’s the point of that, you might say. I’ll just hit the snooze button and sleep for another half hour anyway. So, while you’re at it, as I doubt you’ve used a WHOLE five minutes already, solemnly swear an oath to yourself NEVER to use your snooze button again.

At least half of us smack down the snooze button every morning and as many as one third of us do it at least three times!

Let’s look at a few of the myths associated with snooze alarms, rewriter.ca-style…

MYTH #1 Guess what, you will NOT have another half hour to sleep because the dreaded snooze alarm will be back to ring in your ears in only about NINE minutes, which isn’t long enough for you to have any kind of sleep that counts.

MYTH #2 It feels so blissfully good that surely there’s a good load of serotonin pumped into your brain, just by the act of banging down that button! Actually, the chemical composition in your brain changes when you sleep, and dozing off shakes up the mix of chemicals as you fall asleep again. It’s not all that great a cocktail, and you’re more likely to feel confused and fuzzy and disoriented.

MYTH #3 We must be resting during that time, even if it’s for nine minutes, right? Well, actually NO. A good, restful sleep requires at least 20 minutes. Anything less is just plain disruptive.

Some clocks actually give you the option to dial up to 20 minutes or more to snooze, but really, what’s the point of that?

The truth is, the SNOOZE tends to make us more tired, especially when we haven’t sleep enough. So move that sucker as far away from your bedside as you can, get up when it rings and STAY OUT OF YOUR BED.

Here are a few suggestions that I thought of that you can use to make the best use us of that new-found half hour…

= exercise

= plan your day

= review your goals

= read

= take time to do your “inside work”…anything that builds your mind and body

= have a “HOLY HALF HOUR” where you can meditate or pray or do your affirmations…whatever moves your spiritual side

Try it and see what it does for you. Ideally, you need to be getting enough sleep for this to work. Tumbling into bed at 2 am and grumbling out at 6 am is a recipe from disaster, but it’s been tried by just about every entrepreneur I know!

You’d find that winning your battle with the bed, and conquering mind over mattress style (you might say), will improve you in ways that you never imagined. It sure worked for me!

Can YOU Differentiate Between IMPORTANT and URGENT tasks?

Posted on: April 2nd, 2013 by Deborah Plouffe No Comments

Here ‘s another FIVE MINUTE FIX that we are sharing tonight on Tuesday Night with Neworld. In fewer than FIVE minutes, you could…review your calendar and/or TO-DO list with the objective of differentiating between tasks that are IMPORTANT as opposed to URGENT.

SO, why is it so important to take the time to differentiate between the types of tasks on your to-do list?

Well, one thing that helps to define effective people is by the amount of time they spend working on important as opposed to urgent tasks.

It’s VERY easy to get caught up and be busy being busy. It’s not that you haven’t DONE anything…after all, you checked your emails and tidied your desk and returned your calls and checked your social media sites. Those are all arguably urgent things, but are they really important?

Here is our version of a diagram that’s been popularized by Stephen Covey and many other experts. It’s a quadrant that shows how important, non-important and urgent and non-urgent tasks intersect and I’ve added a list that that gives you an idea of what kinds of tasks fit into each category. It is worth it to research to learn a bit more about this!

When it comes to YOUR to-do list, here are a few tips on how to categorize them…

FIRST…set THREE tasks from the category where important an urgent intersect for the day or week, or whatever your time frame is.

HOW do you do that?
=determine how much value the task has
=think of the long term benefits…is it more important to check your inbox, or to write that article?
=do it first…it avoids distraction that comes from all the little fires that come up during the day that need putting out =have a vision of what you need to do…how does it feel to accomplish it? Does it move you toward your goals?

The natural result is that you become more effective and develop better habits.

Just a quick word about those URGENT tasks…they are like the squeaky wheel and they demand your attention. How do you tell which ones they are?
Sometimes they are VERY hard to distinguish. Try these little tests:

1-Ask yourself, “What are the benefits?” the better the benefits, the more important the task

2-Ask, “What am I trying to accomplish?” How does it fit into your goals?

3-Ask “What are the consequences if I don’t do it? Are they serious? If so, might be important (book title for Judith…Procrastinator’s Guide to the Galaxy)

4-Ask “What is the pay-off?” What is the ROI for the time spent?

5-Does it link to my Mission and Vision?

You will be surprised and amazed how mastering this exercise will really add to your productivity!

TAKE NOTE…and write it down!

Posted on: March 19th, 2013 by Deborah Plouffe No Comments

Tonight on the Tuesday Night with Neworld show, we shared the VERY FIRST Five Minute Fix from our new eBook…and here it is: In fewer than FIVE minutes you can, get yourself a little spiral notebook and START WRITING!

That might sound like a strange idea in the digital age that we’re living in, but hear me out. I have a tablet (the electronic kind) and Outlook and the whole Internet at my disposal, but I still keep my notebook. I use it for everything…for ideas and AHA moments, for notes and strategies and lists and for goals and reminders, for brainstorming and mind mapping and…yes, even for my bucket list.

Why should we use a pen and paper? Or, a better question to ask might be WHY there is such a power in writing things by hand, because there definitely is!

There are a lot of reasons why handwriting just works. It focuses your attention because it requires deliberate thought; plus, it lodges ideas in your long term as opposed to short term memory. That has to do with dual coding and using your procedural and semantic memory at the same time, but who wants to hear about that!!

It could be because there are about 10,000 movements involved with handwriting, as opposed to many fewer that we use typing on the computer. For whatever reason, it is just better for your brain. You just learn and remember better and something about it helps to draw you closer to your goals.

Electronics are great time savers, but NOT great memory enhances. The hand-to-eye to brain circuit is just plain good for the neurons; and don’t forget that a goal is just a dream until you write it down…and I like to think that means with a PEN in your hand!

A FIVE MINUTE FIX from Tuesday Night with Neworld!

Posted on: February 7th, 2013 by Deborah Plouffe No Comments

This week, we shared this FIVE MINUTE FIX from our upcoming eBook with viewers of the Tuesday Night with Neworld show. With  Family Day coming up soon here in Ontario and in several other provinces here in Canada AND Valentine’s Day next week happening just about everywhere, we thought you might find this FIX to be pretty handy!

This one is actually designed for BUSINESS relationships, but it can be very easily adapted to FAMILY relationships as well…so if YOUR family needs a quick fix, try this idea! It’s something that YOU can do for your family if you have FIVE minutes to spare between now and February 18th.

Here’s how it goes! FIRST, grab a scrap of paper and grab your planner!

SECOND, list your FIVE closest personal relationships…family, friends too if your family is a small one. Write down those names on your scrap of paper.

NOW if you LIKE these people, it shouldn’t be TOO hard to come up with FIVE simple ways (one for each person) to make each one of them feel special.

There are myriad websites chock full of ideas, and you should have a whole host of ideas at your fingertips.

Of course, it will take more than FIVE minutes to actually carry these out, so what’s the five-minute fix? Well, it’s the writing down AND…wait for it…take time to set aside time to follow through and DO it!

Think it up, set it up and for Pete’s sake, follow through with it!

DID YOU KNOW…
In five minutes or less, you could…

…make a list of THREE things you’ve decided that you “can’t” do. Now, change can’t to won’t. I can’t lose weight doesn’t sound the same as I won’t lose weight, does it? If won’t feels wrong, that’s good!
